Artist’s description:

Sugar cane grows in the valley
Where once was a forest of trees
Traditional farmers replaced with
Industrial plows and seeds

🚜 This is the fifth in my newest series on Colombian export goods. SUGAR. (And its byproducts ethanol, rum, molasses, etc…) Imagine life without sugar! Not a very sweet idea. Demand is so high worldwide, it is no wonder companies go to insane lengths to produce sugar—it seems the demand will always be growing. Yet as Wendell Berry so wisely stated, “The true measure of agriculture is not the sophistication of its equipment, the size of its income or even the statistics of its productivity, but the good health of the land.”
The Valle of Cauca may be beautiful to the naked eye but it was once a complex forest ecosystem that has been deforested, and the local Afro-Colombian farmers forced to leave or find other work.
I am learning to look beyond what I see, to dig deeper, and though what I discover is often uncomfortable and different from what I’d like to believe, I find that the truth inspires me to care, and speak. I may not know how to stop industrial farming from stripping the land and displacing traditional farmers. But I know how to paint, and my hope for this piece and others like it is to start conversations and spark curiosity about important topics so relevant to all of our lives and wellbeing, worldwide 🤍
