In this three-part workshop, learn the art of DIY paint-making from foraged pigments and create a work of art with your new paints.
Course Description
In this practical workshop, join Colombia-based artists Hayley Dayis and Alexander Fals to create your own paint using foraged mineral pigments anywhere in the world and take that paint to the canvas! Over the course of three weeks, we’ll explore the origin of color, mineral pigments, and ecologically sustainable art forms. Students will be guided on how to respectfully harvest colors from nature, and gain a greater appreciation for and knowledge of where color originates and the cultural context and history of painting with pigments. By the end of our time together, you’ll walk away with an original painting using the DIY paint you sourced during the course and a deeper understanding of the positive ecological and creative impacts of natural pigment painting on our modern day communities.

Foraged Pigment Painting Workshop at Victor Farmington Library
“Join natural pigment artists and painters Hayley Dayis and Alexander Fals to learn how to make your own paints from clays, stones and soils. Alexander and Hayley will give a brief presentation on the origin of natural pigment painting, their process as painters and information about how to forage your own pigments anywhere in the world.
Participants will be able to choose from a variety of pigment colors and mix up paints with biodegradable glue and water. Students may wish to follow the guided painting tutorial or paint free form with their own imagination or reference photo.”

Ngoni Workshop 2024
We are excited to present the Fourth Annual Ngoni Workshop at Gourdlandia in Ithaca, NY! If you are someone who loves instruments, working with your hands and learning new skills, this workshop is for you!

Clothesline Festival
This is our second year attending the renowned Clothesline Festival on the Memorial Art Gallery’s beautiful grounds, and we are looking forward to it! We have a lot of new work to share this year. The Yards Collective: Hayley Dayis “Colombian Riches” Series Debut
Opening Night from 6-9 pm on First Friday September 6th.
This show will be the debut of Dayis’ 15-piece series of natural Colombian pigment paintings titled “Colombian Riches”. This series is dedicated to shedding light on various aspects of Colombia's history, which are inevitably inter-connected with the karmic cycle and fate of people all around the globe. Each piece focuses on one of the country's natural resources (such as flowers, bananas, or coca) and depicts the duality of extracting those resources from the land--the joy and nourishment that they often provide, and also the destruction and violence that their commercialization has incited.
Williams-Insalaco Gallery Exhibition at FLCC

Dayis and Fals are thrilled to be showcasing a collection of natural pigment paintings at the Williams-Insalaco Gallery at Alexander’s alma mater FLCC in Canandaiua, NY. Dayis and Fals’ work will be on display all summer in this elegant gallery, which is open to the public. When students return in the fall, they will interact with the artists on August 29 for an Artist Talk and Q&A, also open to the public.
Impact Earth Exhibition

Hayley and Alexander are very excited to join forces with Impact Earth! The artists’ mission to use non-chemical paints and teach the benefits of working with earth in art-making goes hand in hand with Impact Earth’s mission to “reduce single-use consumption and divert materials from the landfill through: education, access to products and services, and creation of policy and processes.” They have showcased a special collection of natural pigment paintings and prints at Impact Earth’s location on Monroe Avenue for the summer, and the closing event is coming up on August 16. Abundance Co-op Natural Pigment Workshop
Come join us for a creative afternoon at Abundance Food Co-op! In this workshop, you'll learn how to create vibrant paintings using pigments sourced from nature. We will share a presentation on the process of foraging for mineral pigments anywhere in the world, after which you will mix your own paints from scratch, and paint a unique work of art. No prior painting experience is necessary - just bring your creativity and enthusiasm! All art materials and pigments are included. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to connect with nature and unleash your inner artist.

Syracuse Arts and Crafts Festival

Grassroots Festival
Grassroots in Trumansburg, NY is one of our all-time favorite events of the year. This year we will be showcasing and selling our artwork in the Art Barn, plus live painting with natural pigments on both Friday and Saturday!

We are thrilled to be vending at the iconic Blue Heron Music Festival in Sherman, NY! Alexander has been attending this festival since he was a baby, and it was Hayley’s first ever music festival experience at 19 years old. If you have never attended, this is not one to miss. A magical weekend in the woods full of incredible Americana music, top quality vendors, dance, friends, drumming, camping, and great food.

Dayis and Fals will exhibit a collection of some of their finest work this summer at Axom Gallery, an artfully curated space in Rochester’s South Wedge. Opening night will include a demonstration of mixing and painting with Colombian natural pigments.

Hayley Dayis Solo Show at Melo Cafe
Hayley will be showcasing a special collection of small-form natural pigment paintings this June at Melo Cafe, located at the heart of NOTA (Neighborhood of the Arts) in Rochester, NY. Melo Cafe’s founders Renee and Tony Colon regularly travel to Colombia to source their coffee directly from farmers, so this will be a special opportunity to drink delicious Colombian coffee while seeing Colombian flora and fauna painted in Colombian pigments!
