Artist’s description:
The leaf of life
A traveler’s dream
And humble offering
Removes all hunger
With its green and
Wholesome energy
That is the light
That coca brings
But shadow it brings too
For when abused
It sweetly sings
A siren’s deadly tune
No one can know
The sorrow caused
By coca’s sad misuse
The countless lives
Crushed in the jaws
Of profit’s dark excuse
The truth remains
That medicines
Require us to heed
The fine, fine line
Between our whims
And deepest, truest needs
The coca leaf
Like everything
Is dual at its core
So use it well
And you may see
What good it has in store
💚
Interesting fact: the black mineral carbon used to create the gray background wash and details in this piece was sourced in Morales, Colombia, an area that is considered unsafe to go to because of guerrilla presence around coca farming. It is also the only place we know of nearby to source the pitch black we use in our paintings. Because we don’t know the area well and we stick out like sore thumbs, it would have been unwise for us to go collect the carbon ourselves. So we hired Andres, who knows the area well and received permission to enter the zone during the day, to collect mineral carbon for us to turn into paint. As he told us, “if you don’t mess with them, they won’t mess with you.” We are very grateful that he was willing to help us. The pigments used to create this piece directly tell the story of the land they come from.
